The Last DiNardo
In 1921, just after World War I ended, Italian war veteran Ubaldo DiNardo and his wife Marietta made the decision to move their family from Southern Italy to the United States. Their decision to move would not be an easy one to accomplish. Legislative roadblocks would separate their family for several years and prevent them from accomplishing their goal. Ubaldo came first and Mary would follow 7 years later with their two sons, Pasquel and Antonio. Their life in the United States would be filled with adversity and heartache: family deaths, fires, racial conflict, and religious persecution would be constant companions. They would eventually catch a break after an unscrupulous neighbor failed to pay their twin sons, Albert and Mario, born in the United States, money for work they had agreed to do and instead paid them in cherries. This one shady act would define the twins’ lives, bring their family out of poverty, and become a million-dollar family business. This is the story of Albert DiNardo, the last of the DiNardo Clan of Canon City, Colorado, and the family business, DiNardo’s Farm Market.
